Game Design Snippets
Focused game design exercises with documents no longer than 5 pages, practicing concise design communication.
Game Design Snippets is a personal practice project focused on creating concise game design documents (no longer than 5 pages) for specific game mechanics or systems. This exercise challenges me to communicate design ideas efficiently and focus on the core elements that make a gameplay concept compelling. Each snippet addresses a specific gameplay element, mechanic, or system, providing enough detail for implementation while remaining concise. This practice has improved my ability to distill complex ideas to their essential components.
Design Snippet: Temporal Echo Mechanic
Overview
The Temporal Echo mechanic allows players to create a duplicate of themselves that precisely repeats their most recent actions. This creates opportunities for cooperative puzzle solving in a single-player experience.
Core Functionality
- Recording Phase: The player performs a sequence of actions (movement, jumps, object interaction)
- Echo Creation: Player activates the echo ability, creating a ghostly duplicate
- Playback Phase: The echo precisely repeats the recorded actions while the player is free to perform new actions
Design Considerations
- Echo duration should be limited (15-20 seconds) to prevent trivializing puzzles
- Visual distinction between player and echo must be clear but not distracting
- Puzzles should be designed to require synchronized timing between player and echo
Example Applications
- Holding down two pressure plates simultaneously
- Triggering a sequence of switches in quick succession
- Creating a moving platform by having the echo carry an object

Challenges
- •Communicating complete design concepts within a strict page limit
- •Focusing on the most essential elements of each design concept
- •Balancing detail and brevity in technical documentation
Solutions
- •Developed a prioritization framework to identify the most crucial aspects of each design
- •Used visual shorthand and diagrams to convey information efficiently
- •Created a focused template that ensures coverage of critical design elements
