Iron Escape

A walking simulator based on real-world history where a child must escape East Berlin during the Cold War.

Iron Escape

Iron Escape was developed for the Historically Accurate Game Jam 3, with the theme of "The Cold War." This walking simulator puts players in the role of a child attempting to escape from East Berlin to West Berlin in search of a better life. The game focuses on the historical reality of families separated by the Berlin Wall and the desperate attempts made to reunite. As a programmer and game designer on this project, I worked to create an experience that was both educational and emotionally resonant.

Challenges

  • Representing historical events accurately while creating engaging gameplay
  • Conveying the emotional weight of the situation through game mechanics
  • Developing the game within the tight jam timeframe

Solutions

  • Conducted research on historical escape attempts to inform the design
  • Used environmental storytelling to convey emotional context
  • Focused on a streamlined experience that could be completed within the jam timeframe
