Arcane Hunter

Arcane Hunter is a first-person roguelike treasure hunting game developed solo for the Weekly Game Jam - Week 169. The theme was "Treasure Hunter," which I interpreted as a dungeon-delving experience focused on recovering powerful arcane artifacts. Players venture into procedurally generated ruins to collect artifacts that grant unique abilities, which can then be used in subsequent runs. However, death results in losing all collected items, creating tension and risk/reward decisions.

Challenges

  • Developing a complete game experience within the 4-day jam timeframe
  • Creating procedural generation that produced interesting layouts
  • Balancing roguelike progression and difficulty as a solo developer

Solutions

  • Focused on core mechanics and limited scope to ensure completion
  • Implemented a modular room system for procedural generation
  • Designed artifacts that significantly changed gameplay to create variety
